Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 6 wickets for India while MS Dhoni hammered 87 runs in 114 balls as India registered their maiden bilateral ODI series win in Australia.
India finished their tour Down Under on a high with the team registering their maiden bilateral ODI series win in Australia. Needing 231 runs to win, India chased down the target with four balls to spare and won the third and final ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by seven wickets.
For the second straight match, Dhoni played a pivotal role in the chase and scored a fifty for the third consecutive match. At the end of the match, the former Indian skipper was unbeaten on 87 runs from 114 balls. He was supported by Kedar Jadhav, who remained unbeaten on 61 runs from 57 balls. Earlier, Yuzvendra Chahal finished with 6/42 matching the best bowling figures for an Indian in an ODI in Australia. The record was held by Ajit Agarkar. Dhoni won the Man of the series award, while Chahal was awarded the Man of the Match.



With the series win, India finished the Australia tour unbeaten in all the series played. India levelled the T20I series 1-1, won the Test series 2-1 and the ODI series 2-1. In fact, India became the first country to return from Australia without losing a single series.

India’s chase did not go the way they would have liked, with Rohit Sharma departing for just 9 runs. Peter Siddle picking up the opener’s wicket to put India under pressure at 15/1. Shikhar Dhawan started brightly, but wasn’t able to make it count, playing a shot back down across Marcus Stoinis, who showed some quick reflexes to catch it behind him.

MS Dhoni was introduced higher up the order with the surface slowing down, and runs getting harder to come by. With Virat Kohli, the former Indian captain enjoyed multiple reprieves to make Australia pay in the end. Peter Handscomb dropped Kohli (on 10) at first slip off Billy Stanlake in the 12th over. In another poor display of fielding, Kohli was stranded at the non-striker’s end after a bit of confusion in stealing a run – a direct hit would have ended the Indian captain’s innings.

The current and former skippers put together 54 runs off 82 balls for the third wicket, but Kohli’s was then caught behind off Jhye Richardson.

This brought Kedar Jadhav into the middle, who brought plenty of life into the run chase by running hard and chipping in with seven boundaries – the most by an Indian batsman in the innings. Dhoni and Jadhav’s 124-run stand proved to be enough for India in the end. Jadhav soothed Indian nerves as he scored his fourth ODI half-century off 52 balls, as the equation came down to 14 needed off 12. The duo struck two fours in the penultimate over to finish the match.

With MS Dhoni in the twilight of his career, his role is now to take the team across the finishing line, or at least close enough to it. Despite questions over his ability to finish matches at the start of the ODI series, he proved that he’s not finished yet. The former Indian captain performed his role to perfection with some quick running between the wickets, in what could well be his last match on Australian soil.

For Australia, Handscomb (58) scored a battling half-century and took his team to a respectable total despite being 161/6 at one point. This was after India won the toss and opted to field on a rainy day in Melbourne. The start was delayed due to rain but it resumed soon after a short downpour, and no overs were lost.

Chahal, who replaced Mohammed Siraj, made life difficult for the Australian batsmen with deceptive flight and by mixing up the pace of his deliveries. It resulted in multiple Aussie batsmen being unable to read the line of the delivery. Usman Khawaja’s top-edge back to the leggie was one of the best examples of this.

Under cloudy conditions, Australia started poorly once again with Alex Carey (5) falling cheaply, caught at second slip off Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/28). Kumar also accounted for Aaron Finch’s wicket for the third match running, trapping the right hander leg before. It ensured Australia started slowly with the scoreboard reading 30/2 after 10 overs.

Shaun Marsh (39) and Khawaja (34) settled things down for Australia thereafter to put together 73 runs from 85 balls for the third wicket to steer Australia to 100 runs by the 24th over. At this stage, Chahal was introduced and changed the game.

First, Marsh was stumped attempting to play a wide delivery down leg side, with MS Dhoni quickly removing the bails. Three balls later, Khawaja top-edged a simple return catch to Chahal to reduce Australia to 101/4.

Glenn Maxwell (26) hit five boundaries as he tried to counter-attack, but Mohammed Shami (2/47) got rid off him, with Bhuvneshwar taking a great diving catch at fine leg to press India’s advantage.

Australia lost four wickets for 61 runs in 13.4 overs during this passage of play, but Handscomb rescued them with his third ODI half-century that came off 57 balls.

Indian bowlers remained inexpensive with debutant Vijay Shankar going for 23 runs in his six overs. Kedar Jadhav, too, remained perfect with his line and length for the most part, conceding just 35 runs from his six overs.

Ravi Shastri is not known to pull back punches and the India head coach has made it clear that he wouldn’t change his ways if he feels that criticism directed at the national team is “agenda-driven”.



Speaking to ‘The Daily Telegraph’, Shastri also complimented Virat Kohli, describing the skipper as someone who comes “closest to Vivian Richards” in the manner he bats.

On the criticism, there was no direct reference to the critics he considers agenda-driven.

“You expect it. I am one of those that if it is constructive, then fine. If I find it is agenda-driven, I don’t care who the individual is, then I will throw a punch back straightaway. I mean it. I don’t care if he is a legend or a normal person. If I feel I have to punch back I will,” Shastri told former England captain Michael Vaughan, who was interviewing him for the newspaper.
The most recent criticism against the team came from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who had questioned the team combination and training methods after India’s defeat in the Perth Test, which according to Shastri, was akin to “firing blanks” sitting million miles away.

The Indian coach then responded by saying that it were these blanks that pushed the team into doing well at Melbourne.

The best aspect of Kohli’s personality, according to Shastri, is his mindset which is pretty similar to his own. Also the fact that he is very caring of his teammates also makes him the “role model” that he is, said Shastri.

“He is very caring with his team-mates and just a fantastic role model. He has achieved greatness but to still be in the zone and being humble and hungry and wanting Test cricket makes my admiration for him grow more and more,” he said.

Kohli had recently urged youngsters to focus more on becoming good Test players rather than concentrating on shorter formats. The coach, like on many other issues, seemed to be on the same page with his skipper.

“In our country where everything is driven by T20, IPL and one-day cricket to have an individual like him to put the onus on Test cricket more than any format of the game is massive because all the young kids want to emulate him. That is the biggest thing to come out of it.
If Virat Kohli said: ‘I am bored with Test cricket’ you will see the impact it would have on the game, especially in India. For him to enjoy it and enjoy the things that go with Test cricket, like the pressure an individual feels during a Test match, is great.”

Ravi Shastri has seen Sachin Tendulkar get “angry at times” but not Mahendra Singh Dhoni, “a once in 40 years player” who will be very difficult to replace once he bids adieu to the game, according to India’s head coach.

“He is a legend. He will go down as one of our great cricketers. I have never seen an individual so sound. I have seen Sachin at times get angry. Not this man,” Shastri told the ‘Daily Telegraph’.

Shastri made it clear that a player of Dhoni’s calibre can’t be replaced.

“You can’t. Such players only come once in 30 or 40 years. That is what I tell Indians. Enjoy while it lasts. When he goes you will see a void that will be very hard to fill,” he said.

The coach is hopeful that Rishabh Pant would live up to the hype surrounding him but insisted that Dhoni is something else.

When former England captain Michael Vaughan asked if Pant could be Dhoni in the next 20 years, Shastri replied: “I would love to. He has the talent. His hero is MS. Every day he is on the phone to MS. I think during the Test series he must have spoken more to MS than anyone else.”

It’s not just Dhoni’s role as a batsman that defines him but the master strategist in him that takes a lot of load off skipper Kohli’s shoulders.

Dhoni played a crucial role in the decisive third ODI with his unbeaten 87-run knock in Melbourne and his unbeaten half-century at Adelaide.

“I think firstly as a team we are very happy for Dhoni. That he is amongst the runs, because it is very important to get runs under your belt to get that rhythm and get that confidence back. Especially when you have not been playing so much international cricket,” said Kohli at the post-match press conference.”

Kohli said, “Many things happen on the outside. People say a lot of things but as an individual we know that there is no one more committed to Indian cricket than Dhoni and people should let him have his space because he has contributed so much for the nation.

Calling Dhoni one of the ‘most intelligent cricketers, Kohli added, “They should let him figure out things on his own and what he needs to do. He is one of the most intelligent cricketers and he is not someone who is not aware about what needs to be done. As a team we are totally in sync with what he is doing and we are all very happy for him.”

“Dhoni batted at number four in 2016 for a while. But after that he has been pretty happy playing at five and six for the team. We felt that number five was the ideal position for him. And if you saw him bat at Adelaide as well he was pretty comfortable in that position because that allows him to do a bit of both – get some game time as well as finish games off, attacking as and when required,” Kohli added.

Speaking on balancing the team in the absence of Hardik Pandya, Kohli said, “He was more himself from that game (Adelaide) on, and he built onto this knock today. We are pretty happy with the batting combination that we had in Adelaide. When someone like Hardik Pandya is not there you have to balance somehow. So a lot of things vary in that regard. But we as a team, and myself as captain, we feel that Dhoni at five is the most logical. It is the ideal place for him and the team as well.”

Further highlighting the experimenting of No. 4, Kohli said, “If you look at that last game, Ambati Rayudu batted at four, Dhoni at five and Dinesh Karthik at six. Because we brought in Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav, we didn’t want Karthik to change his spot because he is doing a good job,” he said after the third and final ODI of a historic tour of Australia.

The number four position, again, has been a sort of an area which we want solidified,” he said. “But because of the combinations we want to play, some times you have to make those changes.
